Driven by her own breast cancer diagnosis, one professor took action. Regena Barzilay wanted to find a way to detect the disease earlier. She and her team, along with several physicians, developed a new concept: that mammograms should be entered into a computer model. By processing thousands of scans, the computer would learn the early warning signs that the human eye can’t see.
