Proton Therapy Coming to UAB in 2020

The state will have its first proton therapy center in operation by early next year, operated by University of Alabama at Birmingham staff. The new UAB Proton Center is currently under construction on 20th Street South at 4th Avenue South. The facility and machinery inside are owned by Proton International, but UAB will operate the facility.

UAB’s Proton Therapy Center will be the first of its kind in Alabama to house a proton cyclotron—a machine used to shoot a proton beam directly at tumors—for radiation. Unlike X-Ray radiation, the proton radiation is designed to not damage tissues and organs that surround the tumor. It is especially useful in treating children.
